What are we doing?

We are reviewing Denbighshire’s polling districts and polling places.

A polling district is a geographical area created by the sub-division of an electoral area, ie a constituency, district ward or division into smaller parts.

A polling place is a building or area in which polling stations will be located.

A polling station is the room or area within the polling place where voting takes place.

Why are we doing this?

We have a statutory duty (meaning we must do this by law) to review our polling districts and polling places at least once every five years.

As a Council, we aim to ensure that:

  • We maintain a network of polling districts, polling places and polling stations. We aim to ensure that this network has enough facilities to make it easy for people to go out and vote whenever there is a local or national election
  • Polling places are accessible to people with disabilities, as far as practicable.
  • Any proposed changes to the current polling districts and polling places should be able to demonstrate wide support within the polling district.

The Council appreciates the co-operation of privately owned premises in providing their buildings for the day so that electors have a convenient place to vote.

The current polling districts and polling places appear to be well received year on year by the electorate with very few complaints regarding their location and accessibility.

Any changes to polling districts or polling places must have the support of at least 30 registered local government electors, in accordance with the aims outlined in Section 18D of the Representation of the People Act 1983.

What do we want to know?

We’d like to know what you think about your polling district and polling place.

If you would like to make any suggestions for changes to polling districts, please makes sure you keep the following in mind:

  • Is it big enough to accommodate the number of electors (registered voters) allocated?
  • Is it in a central location as possible for the polling district it serves?
  • Will there be long term guaranteed use of the polling place?
  • Will it, as far as practicable, be accessible to people with disabilities?

What difference will it make?

The views gathered during this consultation will be reported to a meeting of the Council in January 2025 to inform the Council’s decisions on the location of Denbighshire’s polling districts and places.

How can you get involved?

Any person or organisation wishing to make representations on the current polling districts and polling places can send a response to the Electoral Services Office.

Representations, if possible, should include suggested alternative premises which may be used for polling purposes within the same polling district. Please give the address and your reasons for suggesting this.

The closing date for all responses is: 15 December 2024.

How will we feed back?

During the review the Acting Returning Officer will publish his recommendations. The Council will then consider the Acting Returning Officers’ recommendations together with any other representations made.
